  • I'm So So Glad I don't Live in England

    http://www.animevice.com/news/britain-bans-anime/4166/

Remember back when we were talking about a law floating around Japan that would ban any sort of underage girl in any sort of explicit situation? Well that law might be dead in Japan, but in the UK a law just like it was passed and is now in effect! Basically the “ Dangerous Cartoon” act, or the “ Coroners and Justice Act 2009” will make anyone owning a picture, movie, video game, etc. that has a character that looks like a child and in a sexual situation, can face up to 3 years of prison time. Which bans almost every hentai manga or anime, and can even make watching some mainstream shows completely illegal.

Who knows where they draw the line? The only thing that is saving this law is that it is so outrageous that there can be no possible way they can enforce it, without throwing many thousands of people into jail.

Yeah rules like this are silly. Far too much objectionality (is that a word?)
Like, when does the character look like a child?
    What counts as "sexually explicit?"

And most importantly, why do laws like this even exist? :|

On a side note, I haven't heard from one of my British friends in about a week....hmmm....

Re: I'm So So Glad I don't Live in England

And what's their definition of 'child'? Is there an artistic merit exception, for serious drama? Is it mostly aimed at 'lulz we raped a kid look how edgy we are' type of content, or content that's meant to be erotic?

So many problems with the summary. I'll check the actual law and see if it has exceptions.

---not that I think laws like this should exist in the first place. I can't justify banning that sort of entertainment when there's no real children involved in the production of it.

There are arguments in psychology about whether viewing that material turns people into criminals, but I don't think the evidence supports a need for a ban.

            Edit: So I've read:
Child is defined as someone who is under age 18 or appears to be. The ban is aimed at works that are pornographic (meaning they focus on child's genitals or a sexual act), is judged as gross and obscene, and appears to have been produces solely to be erotic.

I still don't think the banned works should be banned. There was a big kerfluffle on LiveJournal called StrikeThrough over a similar law in the United States that got people in trouble for producing porn of Harry Potter characters still in school at Hogwarts.

On one hand, I don't realy agree with indoctrination. Nor with censorship...most of the time.
On the other hand , this world is getting more and more chaotic, and it needs some desperate order.

IDK whether this kind of material turns normal people into psichos that won't control themselfs, but it will most deffenetly affect a mentally ill person. I mean some people are completly against violent video games or cartoons (even Looney Toons or Mario...lol ), and they claim all kids will end up insane if they watch/play stuff like that. But I'v played and watched lots of gore stuff, but I'd still puke if I were to see a live gore scene...I'm even a little afraid to touch dead animals, and I'm teriffied of human remains. And I'm not violent out of the ordinary. Same arguments go for metal or rap music.
BUT... there have been plenty of cases of kids going out and shooting people after playing Vice City, commiting suicide after listening to a Judas Priest song that was about death, and satanist goth kids burning churches after listening to a black metal . And rich white kids robbing stores, so they seem more "gangsta".

So maybee it's a just law...but idk if it will be effective in stoping child molesting at all.

This is turning into sme psichology thread, huh?

I'll have to look this one up again but the only case I remember hearing over here about this was some poor manga collector in Florida just recently. Yeah Floriduh again. I swear to god that if florida were to sink with the rising tides nothing of value will be lost.

Oh yeah forgot to post this above as my follow up to the OP

                      http://anonym.to/?http://arstechnica.co ... the-uk.ars

The UK's Labour government, partnering with the Conservatives, yesterday pushed through the controversial Digital Economy bill over opposition from Liberal Democrats and some in its own party. The bill allows the UK courts to order complete blocks on websites, it requires ISPs to start sending P2P warning letters from copyright holders, and it opens the door to throttling and Internet disconnection for repeat infringement.

I guess we might as well say goodbye to any of our British members on GL. Lulz

Anyway...yeah, the PROTECT Act was what caused Strikethrough. That drama went on and on and on...
